When I was very younger, there were so many things I wished for. They were beautiful desires, if they ever came to pass it would be such a beautiful world for me. But they never came to pass and I thank God they never did. My dreams were as beautiful and innocent as I was but the beauty and innocence of these desires were not enough, they were without purpose just as I never knew what was good for me and what was distractions from my purpose. “All that glitters aren’t gold” is not a favorite line for kids! No matter how you sing it, kids would go for all that glitters.
:
It’s good to have desires as a child but these desires gets reformed by the day as we grow more, know more and develop sense of purpose. Kids, no matter how smart they appear to be do not know what is good for them. A friend of mine who served as a team in one of Mark Angel’s show narrated to me how Emmanuella was left in a hotel room all by herself! They let her have things her own way as she wanted to enjoy the AC, she wanted to enjoy the swimming pool and many other facilities without a single thought of the damage it would bring to her health. How would she have known? Even if she was taught, kids needs to be taught same thing over and over again until they grow with it before they can master it. She eventually got sick and couldn’t give her best in the show. Yes, she was that smart girl who outsmart adults in all of her comedy shows but she was still a kid who loved sweets and wanted to enjoy those shiny lifestyles not minding the impact it would have on her health.
:
Is there any kid who never loved sweets? They valued sweets and chocolates much more than they value their teeth. No matter how long you warn them about tooth decay, it makes no sense until they grow up to see the effect of the habits they got into as kids. Even if a kid develops hole in the teeth, they will still never reject those beautiful and colorful lollipops! It’s the dream of every child to have one anytime they want.

I grew up wanting to be a lot of things! I wanted to ride a plane, I wanted to own an island and populate it with domesticated wild animals of all kinds! I wanted to be the real George of the jungle or maybe Tarzan! I also wanted to own a private airport on my island that will only serve me! I wanted to develop my own language, raise my kids with it and have a nation that came from me… Maybe the island would be our own little world.
:
After grandmum of blessed memory who will be buried in a week time of writing this article told us the tale of the moon and how a farmer got stuck there I wondered if it could be true and I also added “going to the moon” in my to-do-list. I dreamed of also having my own colony in the moon where my nation will be extended to. I would spend several hours in the mid night and early morning staring into the moon. The mars picked my interest too and all these desires were so strong that if I ever had a chance I would do it. I almost forgot to say I also wanted super powers! One of those days, I climbed the roof of the storey building where we lived and kept flexing my fingers to see if I would become spider man! I was also tempted to jump and see if any kind of supernatural power would manifest. Because I was a kid, I didn’t discard those movies as “just a movie”, I thought they had certain secrets our parents were preventing us from knowing. I almost turned the house upside down wanting to be act “home alone”.
:
My cousins introduced me to some Bollywood movies! I watched with keen interest and even learn some Hindi words and their meaning. Then holla! I wanted to marry an Indian. I promised myself I must marry an Indian because of their beauty, I promised myself that my kids were going to be breeds of Nigerian and Indian… Perhaps it made sense in my plans of developing my own nation in my own isolated Island where there will be peace without influence from anyone.
:
As good and beautiful as they sound, they were useless fantasies that made no sense to my purpose. I was just being a kid and its not wrong to be a kid as a kid but it is wrong and dangerous to stay at that phase and never outgrow those desires.
:
I grew up seeing the world wasn’t as smooth as I had thought, I also saw those desires dying a natural death. I still look into the sky and the moon wondering what was ever there that got me that much! I have never been in an airplane till now but it has never given me any kind of unrest, not one bit! Marrying an Indian sounds funny and childish these days knowing that if someone ever asked me “why are you marrying an Indian?” I don’t know and wouldn’t tell! If someone ever asked me “why do you want to go to the moon?” I don’t know… Right now, those dreams makes no sense any more to me. Certain other dreams have surfaced and this time they always have reasons attached! Ask me why I want to go to London, I’d tell you quickly that I want to attend a leadership program of HTB where I will learn better how to influence my world in an amazing way! Ask me now why what I need money for I would give you a relevant list of what I’d be doing with it. I still see lollipops but sometimes I go for Cucumber or Aloe Vera because I know I need it, I know it may taste bitter but it’s good to my health.
:
When I see kids narrate their fantasies and act like they think, I laugh just as my parents laughed at mine. I know what it feels like and they will never understand when you prevent them from making some childish steps. My parents know those were just childish but they simply allowed me to enjoy it while it last even as they made sure I was guided. Our fantasies as children were all beautiful but they usually have strong influence from the stories, songs and cartoons we were exposed to!
:
What was your own fantasies then?
