45 YEARS LATER

:

The roads were deserted as the sound of vehicles could be heard once in long minutes. The walls and streets are filled with posters of gubernatorial candidates. People could be seen gathering and arguing who could win the election. The energy company did well this time and every home had the opportunity to watch the electoral commission count the ballots.

:

This exercise have continued into the night. Ashely came into the sitting room with a glass of fresh orange juice, she served her father and sat down to see how far the counts have gone

:

“Papa… Who is winning so far?” She asked

:

“Well, its obvious Dr. Abel Nwankwo has won this election. He just came up from nowhere and swiped everyone off their feet with an unpopular political party. This has never happened in African politics before” he said gulping down quantities of the juice
“Well, I voted him too. People happened to really come to love him because of his wife who single handedly sponsored the ‘Save the Girls’ and ‘War against AIDs’ project. She did this things even before her husband had the intention to do politics… I just believe they want to turn the status quo around” Ashely smiled

:

“Well… That is not my business. Does anyone of them knows I am existing? I am more concerned about my life now” he shivered “my health condition is very bad, my wife is dead, my children have all deserted me except you and your husband.”

:

“Papa… Your health is getting bad because you’re lost in thoughts! Its not good for your age. At this moment, you need to be happy” Ashely smiled

:

“You are the only female child I have out of four children… And you’re the only one who really cares! Others are busy sending letters… What am I going to do with it?” He sighed

:

“See Papa… They really care for you. But they are all busy with work. Your sons do not stay close to this city… All they could do is send you letters and sometimes come see you at the end of the year. I live with my husband in Onitsha and this is Orlu. I am the one who can really  one around” she defended her siblings.

:

“Oh! Thanks to God I have you” He smiled and almost immediately the winner of the election was announced. It’s Dr. Abel Nwankwo.

:

…to be continued
