“A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally…” 1 Corinthians 14:4 NLT
Before the Holy Spirit started manifesting in my life, I saw people who spoke in tongues as people who didn’t know what they were doing or people who thinks prayer is boring and needed to do some odd things to overcome the boredom! When I look at them, I feel they are prone to sin against the Holy Spirit! Most times I pick up courage to speak against praying in tongues. I could remember one of the YAC conventions where it seemed I was the only one who doesn’t speak in tongues, and then I felt I was the only sane Christian. It was later in my Christian life that I came to understand the benefits of speaking in other tongues.
Praying in tongues is an effective means of communication with the Father and it goes beyond the comprehension of the natural mind. Praying in unknown tongues stirs up anointing within your spirit and since the spiritual controls the physical, your physical body is affected by the impact of the exercise. Such spiritual exercise can also affect your natural mind such that you’re able to connect your mind to the signals of the spirit and you see yourself functioning in greater realms of glory!
The English Standard Version puts it this way “The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself…” This puts us right to say that a Christian must always pray in unknown tongues in order to experience spiritual growth. King James Bible uses the word “edifieth” which implies building oneself like an edifice. Through praying in tongues you are charged like a Battery. St. Jude also talked about a similar situation in Jude 1:20 as the World English Bible says it better
“But you, beloved, keep building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.”
As you consistently continue to pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, you are building up yourself on your most holy faith. Praying in tongues ought to be a lifestyle or an addiction for every Christian. It is a tremendous blessing for the people of God. The growth that comes from praying in the Spirit affects not only your spiritual life; it also builds you up mentally and physically as you do it often.
The secret of the success of Apostle Paul’s ministry is based on this. Hear him
“I thank my God; I speak with tongues more than you all” 1 Corinthians 14:18
I love how Young Literal Translation puts it,
“I give thanks to my God — more than you all with tongues speaking”.
If you have received Jesus and have requested for the Holy Spirit, then you can and ought to pray in Spirit as many times as possible! Don’t limit your prayer life to times and conditions, anywhere you are you can always be charged up by speaking in tongues. You shouldn’t distract people with it; just speak as quietly as possible. You will experience renewal, refreshments and revitalization as you continue in this! The reason why some Christians receive God’s word in a special way is because they have programmed their spirits to do so.
