“In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete” John 16:23-24

When I was a child I often got confused during my prayer times, sometimes I don’t even know who to address my prayers to. Sometimes, I pray to the Holy Spirit, sometimes to Jesus Christ and sometimes to God. I prayed that way because I felt that it needful after all it was Three in One God! So even if I prayed to Jesus or to the Holy Spirit I would feel I was praying to God! God overlooks some mistakes in times of ignorance but God wants us to do things the right way! What is my assertion then?

We must be careful with the way we quote scriptures out of context. We don’t pray to Jesus in the name of Jesus, we don’t equally pray to the Father through the name of Jesus! With a closer look at the Bible text presented above we see Jesus saying

“MY FATHER will give you whatever you ask in my name”

Jesus was not talking about us just ending our prayers by literally saying “in Jesus name”… Let me explain! We no longer need any intermediary between us and God, when we pray through the name of Jesus we are making Jesus our medium or intermediary which is not right – it is not the will of God! To pray in the name of Jesus is to stand in the place of Jesus! When we pray in the name of Jesus we are using the right of attorney… When we pray in the name of Jesus what the Father see is Jesus! When we pray in that name we have become the voice of Jesus! It is impossible for God not to grant anything we request by faith in the name of Jesus!

Jesus has ultimately granted us the right to use his name! We have the full right to operate in His stead! It is no longer necessary to pray through Jesus since He has delegated His full authority to us! It was the exact authority that was given to Him after resurrection!

18-20 Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 MSG

9-11 Because of that obedience, God lifted him high and honored him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth—even those long ago dead and buried—will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honor of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11 MSG
