First, I want to admit that “Charity begins at home” is not a statement found in the Bible, it is biblical from one angle and it is unbiblical from another angle. Jesus said

“Love your neighbor as you love yourself” Mark 12:31

If you cannot love yourself, you cannot love your neighbor! If you don’t love your country it is not possible that you love another country… you may just be hypocritical about it. Remember, love is unconditional! If your love for a particular nation is conditional, it is hypocritical! Jesus also said a statement that can further prove the title of this post as biblical. Hear Him

“For God said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,’ and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.’ 5“But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,” 6he is not to honor his father or his mother.’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.… Matthew 15:4-6

We can even go further in the scriptures to prove how biblical (in the context of this post) for Charity to Begin at Home!

“Makes Jesus your Lord proud of you by being good citizens. Respect the authorities, whatever their level; they are God’s emissaries for keeping order. It is God’s will that by doing good, you might cure the ignorance of fools… Exercise your freedom by serving God, not by breaking the rules. Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government.” 1 Peter 2:13-17 (The Message Translation)

“Be a good citizen. All governments are under God. Insofar as there is peace and order, it’s God’s order. So live responsibly as a citizen.” Romans 13:1 (The Message Translation)

Years past, Nigeria started experiencing one of the world’s worst terrorist attacks! Nigerians met the menace with surprise and shock as robbed people off their lives, children, properties, homes and most importantly their joy! The terrorists gave themselves a brand name – Boko Haram, which in summary defines all western education and summary as SIN! Because of what came to Nigerians through the western world, many suffered untold problem especially in the Christian predominated North East part of Nigeria! It reached a point of kidnapping almost 300 school girls at the Chibok town…. The kidnap of Chibok girls was met with untold protest and prayers! I can remember we (Amazing Grace and Mount Zion YAC) dedicated some Nights in praying against terrorism and for the release of the girls in Nigeria… Some International Christian Bodies also did the same.

Now, let us be frank! The media didn’t do well in telling the world how bad terrorism has become in Nigeria, foreign interventions were unserious as many western country that proposed help were both eyeing Nigeria’s oil and other resources! Even before the Boko-Haram attack, more than 3 million people were massacred either through hunger or physical attacks in south-east and south-south Nigeria… Never in the foreign media did we see headlines that said “pray for Nigeria”. When terrorism attacks had become worse in Nigeria, we never saw people change their profile pictures in effect to what was happening, we never saw apps that could replace our profile pictures with Nigerian flag, and we never used the hash tag that says “pray for Nigeria”. What about the killings in South-Africa, Rwanda, Tanzania… what did we do about it? Practically nothing! Perhaps, many of us felt it was none of our business!

Today, majority of the same Nigerians are replacing their pictures with France Flag for just an attack that can never be compared with attacks that has been going on in Nigeria and other African countries! This has further proved that many Africans are hypocritical, they love to follow the trend and often times they don’t really care what it means to them! I am never of the view that we should not pray for other countries, after all some non-Nigerians joined in the Bring Back our Girls campaign; some foreign countries like France gave assistance to Biafra during the civil-war and I can remember that few foreigners also used the “Bring back our girls” campaign as their profile pictures when the Chibok girls were kidnapped. But then, it will be very bad that all these while you never cared for what has been going on in your own country and all of a sudden you have hypocritically become very emotional!

Let all our deeds be powered by compassion! Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead and did other miracles because he had compassion on the victims! It was not because He wanted to showcase his abilities or follow the trend! The Scriptures told us

“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Matthew 9:36

Yes! I am praying for France and I have been praying for Nigeria. I just want to ask some Nigerians, Africans and the rest of the world that has been following the trendy style of using the France flag as their profile pictures because of the Paris-attack

“Have you been praying for your country? Have you ever loved your country like you loved France? Are you just been very hypocritical… Just remember, CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME!”
